BENIN: THE 8TH PARLIAMENT HAS COME TO A SUCCESSFUL END WITH 117 LAWS AND BILLS PASSED.

The 8th Legislature of Benin has come to a successful end and is making way for the installation of Legislators of the 9th legislature.

The National Assembly has held a press conference to lay bare the work done by the 83 lawmakers since 2019.

The conference led by the Assembly’s Deputy Director of Information and Communication Services James-William GBAGUIDI stated that the 8th legislature which served the people for almost four years passed one hundred and seventeen  (117) laws.

According to him, “The political and institutional reforms carried out by the 8th Legislature are the ones that will most durably mark the collective memory of Benin and even beyond.

MR. GBAGUIDInoted that the 8th Parliament under the leadership of their President Louis Gbèhounou VLAVONOU has positively impacted national and international opinion with abundant legislative production and bold reforms in parliamentary governance.

“Also at the level of reforms related to parliamentary governance, the record is admired. From the modification of the rules of procedure of the National Assembly to the restructuring of the parliamentary administration, the redefinition of the rules and practices of financial governance, the strengthening of human resources, the promotion of patriotism and living together without forgetting the strengthening of security and the safety of the parliamentary institution, the 8th Legislature will have left indelible mark.”, Mr. GBAGUIDI underscored.

Touching on the upcoming inauguration, the spokesman for the National Assembly said that the parliamentary administration is working hard to welcome the new deputies on February 12. He reassured further that all measures are being taken to ensure that the 109 elected members of the 9th Parliament quickly find their mark and put themselves at the service of the people who appointed them to represent them.

He insisted that there would be no need to worry about the Chamber’s capacity to contain the 109 elected legislators.

In another development a press release signed by the Administrative Secretary General of the National Assembly Mariano OGOUTOLOU and the Senior Dean of the 9th Legislature, Hon. CossiBarthélémy Mellon VIDJANNANGNI has issued a statement confirming the inauguration on Sunday, February 12, 2023.

The statement which is in accordance with Article 153.2 of the Constitution, 3, 6 and following of the Rules of the Internal Affairs of the parliamentary institution and 147 of the electoral code noted that apart from the opening address of the dean and the communication of the list of elected Parliamentarians, the agenda of the session will focus on other communications and especially the election of the president and other members of the National Assembly office.
