Civil society organisation Parliamentary Network Africa has petitioned the Speaker of Parliament to set up a probe into the disturbances that marred his election.
On the dawn of January 7, 2021, some MPs throwed punches at each other, destroyed ballot materials and snatched ballot papers among others, as chaos broke out in the house.
This led to an invasion of the chamber by armed military and police personnel.
Leader of the NDC side in the House Haruna Iddrisu has indicated he will push for an investigation into the issue. But more than 2 weeks on, nothing has happened.
Parliamentary Network Africa wants a probe constituted immediately.
“We observed with regrets the unfortunate incidents that characterized your election to the high office.
“We recall that on the said date, the conduct of the election witnessed wanton disregard for the rules of the house and best international parliamentary practices, and generally violent behaviour on the part of some Members – Elect,” the petition dated 13th January 2021 and signed by Executive Director of PN Africa Samuel Nana Kwame Obeng, said.
“The unfortunate incident has gravely impaired the dignity of the house and adversely impacted of public confidence in the august house. It is our fervent belief that full probe must be conducted as soon as possible as a first step to remedying the situation.
“We further believe that the probing mechanism should produce recommendations that will be implemented to avert recurrence of the unfortunate incident,” the petition cited by Joy News said.
“In the above regard, we humbly call for the probe into the disturbances which marred the said election and the culprits punished and recommendations made to avert recurrence of the unfortunate incident. This may include be not limited to the following;
1) The general violent behaviour of some members elect and their actions that affected the election process.
2) The presence of strangers in the hallowed chamber of parliament.
3) The role of officials of parliamentary service mandated to ensure order in the house during the period.
“This we strongly believe will salvage the impairing image of parliament and restore public confidence in the house. We also believe the recommendations will help improve and strengthen the institution of parliament and its departments in the discharge of its duties,” the petition added.
