Gilbert Borketey Boyefio

Gilbert Borketey Boyefio is a media specialist with over a decade experience in the Ghanaian media landscape. He has worked extensively in the print media covering various beats such as human rights correspondent, court reporting, the extractive sector and parliamentary reporting.

He is the co-founder of the Parliamentary Network Africa (PNAfrica), a Parliamentary Monitoring Organisation, holding the position of Programmes Manager. He is also the Coordinator of the African Parliamentary Press Network (APPN), a network of African journalists reporting in African Parliaments.

Gilbert has trained journalists and civil society organisations in Ghana, the Gambia, Lesotho and other parts of Africa on parliamentary reporting and how to effectively engage with parliament. He works collaboratively with the Media Bureau of the Pan-African Parliament to bring visibility and attention to the work of the Continent’s legislative body.

He was a speaker during the launch of the Pan-African Parliament Day celebration, and a panelist on the High-Level Panel Committee to review the Pan-African Parliament’s Communication strategy. He was a co-facilitator for a media training for journalists in Southern Africa organized by the Pan-African Parliament in Cape Town, South Africa.

He has also facilitated numerous international events and engagements such as the elections monitoring and tracking campaign promises training in the Gambia, and the Open Parliament Engagements and Networking (OPEN West) workshop in Nigeria.

In Ghana, Gilbert used to work closely with the Public Affairs Department of the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs to mobilized media personnel for programmes organized by the Ministry. With the support of his team and colleagues, Mr. Gilbert Borketey Boyefio spearheaded the national media campaign for the passage of the Right to Information Law (RTI Act) as the National Project Coordinator of the Media Coalition on RTI.

He holds a Diploma in Broadcast and Newspaper Reporting from the Institute of Commercial Management (ICM-UK); an Advanced Programme Certificate in Communication and Governance, from Knutsford University College, Ghana; a Certificate in Oil, Gas and Mining (OGM) Media Training Programme, from Thomas Reuters Foundation, UK, the African Centre for Media Excellence in Uganda, and Revenue Watch Institute, UK; a Certificate on Freedom and Responsibility in the Media, from the International Institutes for Journalism of InWEnt, Germany; a Certificate in Data and Investigative Journalism in the extractive sector, from Penplusbyte, Ghana; a Certificate on International Criminal Law and Justice Training for Journalists, from the African Centre of International Criminal Justice (ACICJ), GIMPA Law School, amongst others.

He is a certified Cashew Master Trainer with a Certificate in Cashew Master Training from the Competitive Cashew Initiative (ComCashew) and the African Cashew Alliance (ACA).

Prior to joining PNAfrica, he worked with numerous media houses in Ghana and Nigeria, occupying key positions. He was the Country Bureau Chief of Orient Energy Review magazine, an oil and gas magazine published in Nigeria. Previous to that appointment, Gilbert was the editor of Offshore Ghana, a specialized oil and gas magazine published in Accra, and Editor of Oil & Gas Ghana magazine, also published in Accra.

Other key positions that he has held in the media landscape include, Editor of the Royal Mail newspaper, and the legal and human rights correspondent for The Statesman newspaper. Gilbert also had a stint as a reporter and newscaster at Channel R FM from 2005 to 2006. He started his career as an intern at The Defender newspaper in 2005.
